BARABOO SCHOOL BOARD POLICY

363.4

It is the policy of the School District of Baraboo to:

  1. prevent user access over its computer network to, or transmission of, inappropriate material via Internet, electronic mail, or other forms of direct electronic communications;

  1. prevent unauthorized access and other unlawful online activity;

  1. prevent unauthorized online disclosure, use, or dissemination of personal identification information of minors; and

  1. comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.

To the extent practical, technology protection measures (or “Internet Filters”) shall be used to block or filter Internet, other forms of electronic communications, and access to inappropriate information.  These measures will be intact for all student and staff workstations in the School District of Baraboo.

Specifically, as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act, blocking shall be applied to visual depictions of material deemed obscene or child pornography, or to any material deemed harmful to minors.

Subject to staff supervision, technology protection measures may be disabled or, in the case of minors, minimized only for bona fide research or other lawful purposes.   Procedures for the disabling or otherwise modifying any technology protection measures shall be the responsibility of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction or his/her designee.

To the extent practical, steps should be taken to promote the safety and security of users of the School District of Baraboo online computer network when using electronic mail, chat rooms, instant messaging, or other forms of direct electronic communications.

The District shall also take measures to prevent inappropriate computer network usage by students as outlined in the District’s Internet Acceptable Use Policy and implementing rules.

Inappropriate network usage is further defined on the staff, student or guest “Computer, Network and Internet Use Summary” and the “Staff Computer/Phone Account Request Form” found in the Baraboo School District Networking Services Technology Use Policy.  Also, outlined in this document are the sanctions for not following the appropriate network usage guidelines.

It shall be the responsibility of all members of the District staff to supervise and monitor usage of the online computer network and access to the Internet in accordance with District policies and rules and the Children’s Internet Protection Act.

Procedures for the disabling or otherwise modifying any technology protection measures shall be the responsibility of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction or his/her designee.
